About this research

Welcome to the app OUR DATA ON THE MOVE. We are a research project which investigates the collection, sharing and uses of digital data about migrants. Migrants are asked to give data about themselves when they embark on their journeys, cross borders or once they arrive in their countries of destination.

What happens to the information collected at borders? This app will help us study how data is used, by whom and for what purposes. If you agree to answer questions, your answers would help us understand where, when and how data about migrants is collected and used. Examples of data include fingerprints, biographic data such as name and surname, or facial mages.

The research is led by Prof Claudia Aradau, professor of international politics at King’s College London. The research is funded by the European Research Council (Project number 819213).

What does participation involve?

You have been invited to take part in this study either because you have given data when crossing borders or because you work with an organisation that uses data about migrants.

By using this app, you are helping and contributing to crucial research about migrant rights, data protection, and ethics of security. Your answers will be used to better understand what data, where, when and by whom collected. We will ask you questions about your experience with giving or using information. Answers these questions would take up to 15 minutes of your time.

Do I have to take part?

No. Please note that participation is voluntary. If you agree to take part, you will answer a few questions anonymously. You can answer as many of the questions as you like.

If you change your mind, you may withdraw at any point for any reason before submitting your answers by pressing the ‘Exit’ button or closing the browser. In that case, no data will be retained. Once you have submitted your answers, it is not possible to withdraw your answers as they cannot be traced back to you.

How will my data be used?

We will not collect any data that could directly identify you. Your IP address will not be stored. We will take all reasonable measures to ensure that data remain confidential.

The data controller for this project will be King’s College London (KCL). Research is a task that the University carries out in the public interest.

Your data will be held securely in a server environment at King’s College London, which is responsible for looking after your data in compliance with UK data protection law (including the UK General Data Protection Regulation and the Data Protection Act 2018). The information you give us will be kept for 3 years after the end of the project. We will then destroy it by deleting all electronic and physical copies.
